Brno traditions
The city of Brno has a long tradition of trade fairs, which is inextricably linked to the industrial development of the city as an industrial, scientific and logistical centre of Central Europe.
Annual markets and fairs have been held in Brno since 1243. The first fairs were associated with the city’s flourishing textile industry in the 18th century.
Trade fairs were held regularly in Brno from 1821. Wholesalers from Vienna, Linz, Saxony, Hungary and Turkey visited the annual markets in Brno, as they do today.
The largest number of visitors (104,000) came to the Imperial Jubilee Exhibition in 1888.
Thanks to the tradition of trade fairs and the recognition of the Brno Exhibition Centre as the leading trade fair venue in Central Europe, Brno is also known as the “Trade Fair Capital”.
Brno milestones
The Brno Exhibition Centre was completed in 1928 and became the most modern and largest exhibition centre in Central Europe.
Hall A, formerly known as the Palace of Industry and Trade, became the symbol of the city of Brno.
On 26 May 1928 the Exhibition of Modern Culture in Czechoslovakia was opened under the patronage of Tomáš G. Masaryk, the first president of Czechoslovakia.
