Our goal

MSC wants to build trust and contribute to the peaceful resolution of conflicts by providing robust, curated, yet informal dialogue within the international security community. Today, MSC is the world's leading forum for discussing international security policy. MSC views its conferences as an independent “marketplace of ideas” where proposals and solutions are developed and views are exchanged. It provides a platform for formal and informal diplomatic initiatives and approaches to addressing the world's most pressing security threats. According to its original motto, MSC places a special place on informal meetings between government officials to promote peace through dialogue. In addition to the annual Main Conference, MSC regularly organizes first-class events on specific topics. Topics and Regions publishes the Munich Security Report, a yearly collection of the most up-to-date figures, maps, and analyses on critical international security challenges.

Our audience

During the MSC Main Conference in February, we bring together more than 450 senior decision-makers and prominent opinion leaders from around the world, including heads of state, ministers, leaders of international organizations and non-governmental organizations, as well as leading representatives of business, media, research, and civil society. MSC is convinced of the need for ongoing and informed public debate on the broad concept of security and is therefore committed to allowing the public to participate in its debate. Most of our discussions are broadcast, and the results of these events are published in reports, interviews, and social media.

Our attention

The Munich Security Conference has transatlantic and European roots, but our activities reflect a globalized world. MSC is committed to increasing its geographic diversity and inclusion of all stakeholders. The Munich Security Conference aims to discuss the most critical security issues. But MSC also draws attention to problems that are not yet on the agenda of the international security community. MSC is a comprehensive security concept that covers not only traditional national and global security issues but also - among other things - economic, environmental, and human security aspects.

Transatlantic security policy and European defense are among the main themes of the Munich Security Conference. With a series of safety and security policies, MSC is launching a debate on various security policy issues.

About the series “Defense and Security Policy”

Since the turn of the millennium, the global security environment has changed rapidly. An increasingly multipolar world is characterized by a growing number of state power poles, such as Russia and China, as well as an alarming number of non-state armed groups and fragile states. These events have led to intense debate about the current and future global security architecture.

In this context, the traditional focus of the Munich Security Conference on European defense cooperation and transatlantic security is more relevant than ever. The MSC not only works for deeper and more effective defense and security cooperation in Europe but also contributes to the international debate on a wide range of defense and security issues, including nuclear and conventional arms control, counter-terrorism, transnational organized crime, intelligence cooperation, planning and procurement, and strategic foresight.
