About Exhibition Center Westfalenhallen Dortmund
The Westfalenhallen in Dortmund, Germany is a notable commercial complex known for its historical significance, architectural design, and role as a major venue for various events. The venue was originally built in 1925 as a wooden structure.
The original building was destroyed by bombing in May 1944 during World War II. In 1952, a new building was constructed with a concrete structure and a free-floating roof, eliminating the need for obtrusive support columns inside the arena. The modern design includes a light and delicate glass facade, making it architecturally significant.
In 2003, the Westfalenhallen’s cycle path was renovated. Further interior renovations in 2011 and 2012 removed the cycle track due to reduced demand and increased the capacity to up to 15,400 spectators. In addition, an important symbol, a large illuminated “U” for the Dortmunder Union brewery, has been on the roof since 1968.
Role as an event venue
The Westfalenhallen has hosted several major events and concerts. Amazing performers include Bob Marley and The Wailers, Pink Floyd, ABBA, U2, and Madonna. It was one of only four locations worldwide for Pink Floyd’s “The Wall Tour” in 1981. Iron Maiden recorded their live CD/DVD “Death on the Road” at the venue.
The venue has been instrumental in the breakthrough of several artists and bands. It has hosted over 30 World Championships and over 50 European Championships, and its concert history includes more than 1,000 artist names. The hall has been awarded the Goldene Westfalenhalle for artists such as James Last and Udo Jürgens.
Overall, the Westfalenhallen is a significant cultural and historical landmark in Dortmund, offering a unique combination of architectural beauty and a rich legacy of hosting diverse and prominent events.
