The former monastery, now Kloster und Schloss Salem, is set in extensive parkland and gardens. The magnificent 12th-century Cistercian abbey complex came into the possession of the Margraves of Baden in 1802 and has been part of the State Palaces and Gardens of Baden-Württemberg since 2009.

The Prelature building houses the Abbey Museum with the ‘Masterpieces of the Imperial Abbey’ section of the Baden State Museum. It takes visitors on a chronological journey through the eventful artistic and architectural history of the Cistercian abbey, from the High Middle Ages to the late Baroque period. The absolute highlight is the Salem Marian Altar by Bernhard Striegel. Baroque portraits and a cycle of sculptures by Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer bear witness to the high artistic standards of the Salem abbots.
