This conference will include presentations on key developments on a wide range of topics covering the multiple roles of efflux transporter pumps in health and disease. The impact of the explosion of structural data from cryo-EM on our molecular understanding of substrate selectivity and regulation of molecular transport across cell membranes will be highlighted. Speakers will discuss the role of multidrug efflux pumps as barriers to harmful xenobiotics, including roles in protecting the central nervous system, fetus, and reproductive organs. The program will also include presentations on the relationship between pharmacological targeting of efflux pumps and systemic toxicity and key CNS penetration strategies for the treatment of neurodegeneration and other neurological disorders in the area of aging-related diseases. Discussions are planned on how to use microbial drug resistance strategies to overcome the current crises in the treatment of malaria, multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, and drug resistance in Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. How antimicrobial warfare can be supported by a healthy microbiome and the importance of transport and signaling among biofilms will also be the subject of intense debate. Overall, this conference will facilitate discussion at the cutting edge of science about multi-component drug efflux systems to improve global health and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which envision a world with equal and universal access to quality education and healthcare, where physical, mental and social well-being are ensured . This GRC will also be held in conjunction with the Gordon Research Seminar for Young Scientists (27-28 April).
