About Exhibition Center Bass Park
Bass Park is a city-owned facility in Bangor, Maine that provides a variety of entertainment and recreational opportunities for visitors. It is home to the Bangor State Fair, one of the largest agricultural fairs in Maine, and the Hollywood Casino Raceway, a harness racing track that operates in the summer. Bass Park also has a large parking lot that can accommodate events at the nearby Cross Insurance Center, a multi-purpose arena and convention center.
Park History
Bass Park was originally known as Maplewood Park, named after a hotel located near the main entrance. It was owned by Joseph Parker Bass, a newspaper publisher and politician who founded the Bangor State Fair in 1883. The fair was an expansion of the Bangor Horticultural Fair, which had begun in 1849. Bass also built the racetrack in 1883, which has hosted events such as baseball games, polo matches, car races, circuses, and even the world’s only transatlantic balloon race in 1992. Bass donated the park to the city of Bangor in 1919 on the condition that it be renamed in his honor and used for public and semi-public purposes.
Park Features
Bass Park covers 80 acres and includes several facilities and attractions. The Bangor State Fair is held annually at Bass Park in late July or early August, attracting thousands of visitors who enjoy the midway rides, games, food, entertainment and agricultural exhibits. The park also has several barns that house livestock and 4-H animals during the fair, although they will soon be demolished. Bass Park also has a large parking lot that can accommodate up to 4,500 vehicles, making it convenient for visitors to access the Cross Insurance Center or other nearby attractions.
