About Exhibition Center Base sous-marine de Saint-Nazaire
The Saint-Nazaire submarine base is one of five built on the Atlantic coast by Nazi Germany during World War II. Built in just 16 months by the German army from the beginning of 1941, the base is a huge block 301 meters long. Nearly half a million cubic meters of concrete were poured to build this strategic element of the Battle of the Atlantic. Under a roof up to 9.60 meters thick, the base, consisting of 14 compartments, housed not only the famous German submarines, but also offices, workshops, storage facilities, medical services and living quarters for the hundreds of people stationed here until May 1945. The submarine base was built on the site of a former transatlantic port from which ships departed for Central America.
The Submarine Base Today
Take a walk through its chambers, play with perspective, follow the light and the water. Above all, climb to the roof and look out over the city, harbor and estuary from this vast observation deck. Over the last twenty years, a massive renovation project has made it an integral part of the city and port landscape. Saint-Nazaire has returned to its original port and an original tourist and cultural offer has been created in the heart of the submarine base. You can visit Escal’Atlantic, a museum dedicated to legendary liners, listen to concerts in the VIP, discover a contemporary art exhibition in LiFE or organize a major event in Alvéole 12. The submarine base is also home to the Saint-Nazaire Tourist Office.
