About Exhibition Center Messe Berlin
Berlin Expo Center City (Messe Berlin) is the largest and most important exhibition center in Berlin and hosts some of the world’s largest and most famous trade shows. Berlin Expo Center City covers a total area of 550,000 square meters.
It is operated by Messe Berlin GmbH, one of the world’s top ten trade fair organizers. The company was founded in 1992, and its general director is Christian Goecke.
The first exhibition hall of the center was built in 1914 for automobile exhibitions, and the second hall was built in 1924, but during the Second World War, the buildings were destroyed by bombs. The structural basis of the modern exhibition center was designed by architect Richard Ermisch in 1937 and has been preserved to this day.
The site’s interior, a green stadium area called the “Summer Garden,” was also created during the redesign in the mid-1930s. All the buildings constructed between 1930-50 are historical monuments protected by the state. In 2017, construction began on the hub27 Berlin multipurpose building. It is scheduled to be completed in April 2019.

Taking responsibility – for people and the environment
Taking on the World – As an international organization, we take responsibility for our guests, business partners, employees, and the environment. People worldwide attend our events every year to learn about new products, network, and exchange ideas. We strive to offer our guests the ideal trade fair experience – sustainable and responsible at all levels.
Sustainable business development is one of Messe Berlin’s strategic goals and, as such, is firmly anchored in the Messe Berlin Code of Conduct.
“Responsible economic thinking and action, security, privacy and data protection, integrity, diversity, and open communication, as well as social responsibility and sustainability. These are the values on which our daily activities are based.
From social responsibility projects to environmental and climate protection measures, sustainability has been essential at Messe Berlin for many years. With the first presentation of the correlation statement for the German Sustainability Code for the fiscal year 2020, we also paved the way for preparing a sustainability report. The German Sustainability Code (DNK) helps companies to develop and implement a sustainability strategy.
Reduce, reuse, recycle – waste management at Messe Berlin
Whether packaging, building materials, or food waste – waste is unavoidable at trade fairs and congresses. By introducing innovative concepts, we aim to reduce waste at events step by step, for example, by reusing and recycling valuable materials.
Separate collection of recyclable materials and their return for recycling
Council Working Group on Innovation: Exchange ideas and development of approaches for efficient waste management with the waste management company ALBA.
Cooperation with the Berlin Senate Department for the Environment, Mobility, Consumer Affairs, and Climate in the “ReUse Berlin – Zero Waste” initiative to recycle standing construction materials further.
Several events, including International Green Week and Fruit Logistica, aim to combat food and resource waste and help those in need by donating leftovers to the Berliner Tafel food bank.
