About event
The National Sustainability Summit, to be held at Citywest Exhibition Center in Dublin, will highlight the new opportunities for businesses and entrepreneurial people arising from the Government’s recently published Climate Action Plan, which aims to achieve a cleaner, safer and more sustainable future for Ireland.
Covering all relevant sectors – electricity, businesses, housing, heating, transport, agriculture, waste and the public sector – the Climate Action Plan sets out how Ireland will achieve its 2030 carbon emissions targets and puts the country on a trajectory to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Adopting the same model as the Government’s Jobs Action Plan, it sets out more than 180 actions, as well as hundreds of additional actions that need to be taken.
For example, the Climate Action Plan aims to: transition to 70% of our electricity from renewable sources by 2030 – currently only 30% of our electricity comes from renewable sources; bring 950,000 electric vehicles onto our roads and create a charging network across the country; ban the sale of petrol/diesel cars from 2030; ensure reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture; and eliminate non-recyclable plastics while raising production fees for materials that are difficult to recycle.
Other actions include: implementing an intensive retrofit program to install 400,000 heat pumps in homes and businesses, replacing existing carbon-intensive heating systems; creating a new micro-generation scheme allowing homeowners to generate their own electricity and sell excess back to the National Grid; a new plan to retrofit 500,000 homes, with large groups of homes being retrofitted by the same contractor to reduce costs, reasonable financing and simple payback methods; and expanding the network of bike paths and Park and Ride facilities to reduce congestion.
Irish companies across all industrial and commercial sectors are committed to reducing their environmental footprint and are already implementing sustainability strategies. Of course, implementing sustainability practices can also lead to increased operational efficiency by reducing costs such as water and energy, as well as waste.
