About event
The Finnish Comics Association has been organizing comics festivals in Helsinki since 1979. In the early years the festival was held in the Old Student House, then around the city, and now in Suvilahti. From the very beginning, the structure of the festival remained similar, within different themes. The Helsinki Comics Festival offers public interviews, panel discussions, performances, workshops and trade shows for invited publishers, both large publishers and small magazine writers.
The festivals have been attended over the years by Will Eisner, Willem, Moebius, Marjane Satrapi, Morris, Joakim Pirinen, Neil Gaiman, Liz Myhre, Kate Charlesworth, Lilly Carré, Brian and Mary Talbot and others, as well as Paul Gravett, among the homegrown authors. Over 40 years, the number of visitors has grown from about a thousand to 11-20 thousand per year.
